The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
