The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address

During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
